Spelling Magic iPad apps

The ABC Spelling Magic apps by Preschool University support students' phonetic knowledge, understanding, and application.

Spelling Magic 1 focuses on short vowels. Spelling Magic 2 focuses on consonant blends. Spelling Magic 3 focuses on long vowels and Spelling Magic 4 focuses on multiple syllable words.

Each Spelling Magic app includes two activities to support the hearing, identification, and "recording" of phonetic word features...
  • word building- a picture, corresponding letter tiles (in random order), and "sound boxes" are provided
  • moveable alphabet- a picture, "sound boxes", and the entire alphabet is provided

The Spelling Magic apps include a variety of "options" that scaffold student development of knowledge and skills for application.
In the First Grade Butterfly classroom, the Spelling Magic iPad apps are utilized to support student learning in instruction, guided, and independent student application of hearing, identifying, and "recording" short vowels, long vowels, consonant blends, and phonetic features in multiple syllable words.

encouraging phonetic understanding and application- with iPad apps

Supporting students' spelling development, the First Grade Butterflies cooperatively engage in iPad apps that promote their phonetic understanding and application.

Cooperatively, the Butterflies attempt to identify the sounds in the word of focus and apply the corresponding letters in sequential order to accurately spell the word.
With each word of focus, the Butterfly iPad word work partners coopertively identify the sounds in the word and alternate moving the corresponding letter (or letters- for identified "word parts"... for example: moving the "s" and "t" letters for the "st" sound or moving the "a", "n", and "d" letters for the "and" word part in the sord "stand") and explaining his/her thinking and understanding.

The first graders cooperatively utilize the Rocket Speller iPad app and the Cimo Spelling Sound Out iPad app on the student iPads for skill development.
