solving math word problems- Banana Math iPad app

As mathematicians, the First Grade Butterflies use reading strategies to read math word problems and identify the important information and question. The Butterflies use operations, algebraic thinking, and problem solving skills to solve word problems.

Banana Math is an iPad app the Butterflies use to develop their math skills with word problems. The first graders work independently and/or collaboratively (explaining their thinking-reasoning to partner) to solve addition and/or subtraction word problems using the Banana Math app.

iPad headphone lesson learned

With continuous student use of iPads an accident is going to happen... with individual iPads, students were plugging headphones directly into the iPad headphone jack.

with varying quality of headphones being used- the plug of a student's headphones broke off inside of the iPad headphone jack. :(

iRepair Solutions was able to remove the broken piece, but unfortunately the headphone jack no longer works. Fortunately the iPad sound does periodically (the sound inconsistently states headphones are plugged in and will not emit sound).

In an attempt to prevent future breaks, I purchased headphone splitters for each individual iPad. Students plug their headphones into a jack on the headphones splitters when using their individual iPad with headphones or each partner plugs his/her headphones into a jack on the splitters when using the iPads with a partner and headphones.

The headphone splitters remain plugged into the iPads and are only removed during charging.

Lesson learned:)

Math Race 210 iPad app

The First Grade Butterflies develop their fact fluency while using the Math Race 210 iPad app with a math partner.

The Math Race 210 app can be individualized for each "player"- focusing on Common Core Math Standards.

non-fiction reading on iPad

The First Grade Butterflies have been learning about and reading non-fiction genre.

As readers, the Butterflies have been learning how readers use the structure and text features of non-fiction to learn all about, learn specific information, confirm or reconsider knowledge, and...

In addition to non-fiction books in the classroom library, the Butterflies have access to non-fiction books through the Storia iPad app.

As readers the first graders are learning how to apply pre-reading, reading, and post-reading strategies to read non-fiction and comprehend content information.

The Butterfly readers partner read and talk about their thinking, questions, understandings, connections, and... with other readers to better understand.

equation sort- math on iPad

The First Grade Butterflies have been learning about the importance of "thinking" as mathematicians and explaining their thinking-reasoning to others through speaking, creating a visual, and/or writing.

The Butterflies work cooperatively and collaboratively with math partners to problem solve- "thinking" and explaining their thinking-reasoning.

The first graders used their problem solving skills to view and analyze an equation sort on the iPad to determine "how" the sort was completed, "label" each column heading, and generate and record an equation for each column that corresponds to the sort.

The math partners imported the sort from the class shared "iPad Math" Dropbox folder into the Notability iPad app. They used the stylus and writing-typing features of the Notability app to take notes, make connections, create visuals,... and to title each column heading and record an equation at the bottom of each column. After completion- the math partners saved the sort into their individual Dropbox folders and emailed me (teacher) the completed sort... providing the capability for parents to view in their child's Dropbox folder, allowing me to collect and view, and providing the capability to display completed sorts on the SMARTBoard for students to view and discuss and partners to explain.

Math Fill iPad app

The First Grade Butterflies are mathematicians who use mathematical knowledge and thinking to problem solve!

Students work cooperatively and collaboratively with a math iPad partner using the Math Fill iPad app to determine the "missing" quantity in addition and/or subtraction equations.

Using the Math Fill iPad app...
-partners view the equation (or equations) on the screen and identify the operation, known information, and missing part (or parts)
-partners view the "available" numbers at the bottom of the screen
-partners share and discuss their thinking and reasoning for the number (or numbers and location for) to accurately complete the equation
-after agreement- partners move the identified number (or numbers) into the location (or locations) within the equation (or equations) and check for accuracy
-if inaccurate... partners discuss and revise

Griffin Multi-Dock iPad charging station

A BIG THANK YOU to the Wilks and Glinski families for our Griffin 10 unit Multi-Dock iPad charging and sync station!

It is WONDERFUL!
-the iPads fit easily into the individual slots (in the Trident Kraken case)
-the entire unit is compact
-it is simple to use
-each slot has an individual cord and charging light that flashes as charging and remains lit when charging is complete

Student ipads are charged as needed (as iPads reach a certain % of remaining battery).

The Griffin Multi-Dock (10 unit) Charge and Sync Station fantastic!

3 Snakes- measurement

Measurement Standards in the First Grade Common Core include- "order 3 objects by length; compare the lengths of 2 objects indirectly using a 3rd object".

The First Grade Butterflies used the 3 Snakes iPad app to compare and order lengths of 3 objects!

As mathematicians, the first graders...
-read the "challenge" (for example: "Make the blue snake longer than the red snake and shorter than the green snake." or "Make the green snake longer than the red and blue snake.")
-manipulated the front and/or back ends of the snakes using the arrow keys on the screen
-checked accuracy at completion

The 3 Snakes iPad app integrated reading with math and challenged students to apply viewing skills to manipulate, compare, and evaluate length.
