student iPad e-mail

Having an e-mail for each student iPad allows information and attachments to be sent to and shared with student iPads, among student iPads, and allows information and attachments to be sent to and shared with the teacher.

But...
1. I wasn't comfortable creating "student" email accounts for 6 and 7 year olds.
2. I didn't want to create 26 separate email accounts. (I could only imagine the headache of managing an additional 26 accounts.... ahhhhh!)

So... I searched and researched options for email accounts on student iPads and found a great option! It is the gmail "+" method.
   1.  create a gmail account
for example- general e-mail account of "firstgrade@gmail.com"
   2.  for each individual iPad e-mail add a "+" followed by individualization
for example- individual e-mail account of "firstgrade+ipad1@gmail.com"

I created my classroom iPad "general" e-mail account and used the + method for each individual iPad (creating "+ipad(#)" for each of the 13 student iPads) to create an individual iPad account for each student iPad.

Each student will include his/her name in the subject line to identify between the two students utilizing the student iPad account when e-mailing information or submitting publications and/or progress.

2:1 student iPad organization

The greatest value of student iPads is the capability to individualize the content within an app for each student and the capability to individualize apps available to each student.

With a 1:1 student iPad ratio, individualization is simple... you individualize the iPad to the specific student.

With a 2:1 student iPad ratio, individualization is not so simple... but it is possible!

Thirteen iPads in a classroom of twenty-six students= two students per one iPad.

organizing student iPads
Each of the thirteen iPad cases will be "numbered" (1-13) to identify the iPad. (Exactly "how" I will number the cases has not been determined. I will share how I numbered each case after I receive the cases and determine the best way to "number" each individual case.)

Two students will be assigned to one iPad.
A photo of the "iPad partners" will be taken and used as the background screen on the iPad as an additional form of identification.

A document listing each iPad number and the assigned iPad partners will be created and used as a reference to individualize the apps and app content on each iPad relevant to the iPad partners.

Student iPad partners will not be assigned prior to the initial 4-6 weeks of school. Once assigned, iPad partners will be consistent for management of apps and app content on each iPad.
During the initial 4-6 weeks of the school year, students will be introduced to the iPad and specific apps with a variety of partners.
Utilizing the initial 4-6 weeks of the school year to introduce the use and care of the iPad, introduce apps, and most importantly learn about, identify, and recognize each student as an individual learner and person will provide me with the understanding and knowledge of each student to effectively create iPad partners.

iPad mirroring

I have used the Spashtop Remote Desktop app to access and interact with my teacher PC desktop from my iPad. The Spashtop app allows interaction between the SMARTboard and the iPad, relevant to the content on the desktop.

It is useful, but...
what I really want is interaction between the SMARTboard and the iPad, relevant to the content on the iPad. And unfortunately- that capability does not exist. :(

After more research, I discovered "mirroring". "Mirroring" is displaying the content on the iPad through the SMARTboard minus the interaction. It allows you to interact with the iPad and project the iPad content onto the SMARTboard.

I believe capability to "mirror" the content on the iPad onto a large screen for student reference and/or for instruction is optimal for the effective integration of iPads in the classroom.

In hopes that "mirroring" will be as effective as I think and want for it to be, I have purchased (not funded through the grant) an Apple iPad AVG adapter and a 15 foot extension cord to provide the capability to "mirror" the iPad onto my SMARTboard.

Fingers crossed! :)

student iPad accessories

Student iPad accessories are a necessary component of integrating iPads in the classroom.
With 6 and 7 year olds (first graders) sharing an iPad (2:1 student iPad ratio), the quality, durability, usefulness, and effectiness of each accessory in supporting students' greatest learning is very important to me.

iPad 2 case
The iPad case and a screen protector are essential accessories in protecting and preserving the iPad. After extensive research and case comparisons- the choice case was the Trident Kraken II Hybrid Case.
The Trident Kraken includes a silicone inner sleeve, polycarbonate plastic shell, silicone plugs over ports, and... a built in screen protector!
-student iPad cases provided through the "iPads In Learning" grant

iPad 2 stylus
A stylus is a valuable accessory for student iPads in a first grade classroom.
Considering the length, width, and weight of the stylus to mimic a classroom writing utensil and the quality and durability of the stylus for student use- the choice stylus for student use on the iPad 2 was the Targus Stylus.
-one stylus for each iPad provided through the "iPads In Learning" grant

iPad 2 headphone splitter
A headphone splitter is a beneficial accessory with two students sharing an iPad. The headphone splitter allows two students to simultaneously use headphones and interact with one iPad.
The choice headphone splitter for two students sharing one iPad was the Belkin Headphone Splitter. (Belkin additionally sells "The Rockstar" headphone splitter that connects up to five headphones.)
-one headphone splitter for each iPad purchased by myself (the teacher)

iPad headphones
Although headphones and a headphone splitter are not necessary accessories, they are beneficial accessories.
Recognizing each child as an individual, parents will be asked to provide a pair of headphones, earclips, or earplugs for his/her child. This will ensure the comfort of use and the health safety of each student.

iPads In Learning

In the spring of 2012 I submitted a grant for a class set of twenty-six iPads titled, "I"nnovative "P"rogress "A"nd "D"evelopment for "S"tudents In Learning (iPads In Learning).
And... my grant was approved in part!
Yeah! I will receive a half-class set of thirteen iPads (a 2:1 student iPad ratio), thirteen iPad cases, thirteen styluses, and $100 for apps to support and enhance the learning of my first grade Butterflies. Yipeeeee!
A BIG thank you to The Mason Schools Foundation (Mason, Ohio) for this amazing opportunity!
